Exploring A Midsummer Night's Dream

Calling all creatives, weirdos, nerds, and clowns aged 8 to 18! Do you memorize song lyrics even to the songs you don’t even like? Do you like playing make-believe? Do you dance around in your living room? Do you believe in fairies? Join Donnie Gott for a summertime adventure filled with humor, magic, transformation, and most importantly PLAY! Drawing from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, this two-week course will introduce students to Shakespeare by way of some of his most delightful characters and will provide young artists with a joyful and engaging pathway to learning about Shakespeare. Students will work from the original text to explore Shakespeare’s language – touching on the use of iambic pentameter and verse with an overall focus on understanding.

Over the course of the camp, students will craft a Shakespearean monologue or scene under professional direction and develop performance skills through movement and breathwork. Actors will learn to provide constructive evaluation of each other’s work and learn how to incorporate evaluation into their own work. Each day will bring opportunity for education, connection, exploration, and fun in a supportive and inclusive environment. Sign up today for one or both sessions, and come and play!

Explore and strengthen your musical theater skills in this 1 or 2 week intensive led by actors from the Broadway stage! Students ages 10-18 take classes in dance, voice and text for the actor, movement, ensemble work, and performance techniques, and also rehearse scenes, songs, and dances from existing musicals that lead to three performances. Theater Alaska is partnering with Broadway Barkada in offering Musical Theater Camp. Broadway Barkada was founded in 2009 by Liz Casasola, Brian Jose, and Billy Bustamante. What started as a small group of Filipino performers has turned into an organization comprised of nearly one hundred active members. Broadway Barkada aims to nurture and support Filipino artists who believe in the importance of cultural awareness. Through art and education Broadway Barkada aims to bring the Filipino experience to a diverse audience and to give them a deeper understanding of our culture and our artists.

Have fun applying and bringing together the disciplines of singing, acting, and dancing, to create an enthralling musical theater presentation. Students will be encouraged to interpret material musically, physically and dramatically, then create staging and choreography for a performance culminating at the week’s end. Students' creativity will be ushered in by way of Ericka Lee, a well-established Juneau musical theatre performer.
